Wired Networking Overview:
Wiring – cabling permanently installed in walls and/or ceilings- Wiring from service point to workgroup point is currently based on Category 5E standard (or soon, possibly, the newer Category 6) wire bundles, with a maximum length of about 100M.- Wiring from workgroup point to building connection point is currently based on optical fiber with specific length and other physical restrictions. - Wiring from the building connection point to backbone will be based on optical fiber with known length and other physical restrictions. Equipment Rooms – dedicated space with clean, isolated power and sufficient air handling to house sensitive electronics - A workgroup equipment room (often called a “wiring closet”) is a secure, environmentally controlled space used to house one or more workgroup concentration devices (sometimes called an “IDF”).- A building equipment room is a secure, environmentally controlled space used to house the building connection device(s) (sometimes called a “MDF”). KNOWN PROJECT CHALLENGESProject challenges are substantially of two types – technical and/or engineering challenges that have to do with network design, support, and operation; and socio-political challenges that concern issues such as cost sharing, space utilization, special needs, and management and control issues. Network Engineering - We work with building occupants to identify short and long term connectivity requirements;- We identify building-specific vertical and horizontal cabling restrictions, and workgroup and building equipment room requirements; - We will work within cable length constraints, building-specific constraints, and equipment room space allocation to design the physical facility to provide current connectivity at a reasonable initial cost and be upgradeable to support future needs; and- We will support special laboratory and wireless access to the extent that it can be justified and contained within project budget.

Wireless Networking
Wireless network refers to any type of computer network that is wireless, and is commonly associated with a telecommunications network whose interconnections between nodes is implemented without the use of wires, such as a computer network (a type of communications network). Wireless telecommunications networks are generally implemented with some type of remote information transmission system that uses electromagnetic waves, such as radio waves, for the carrier and this implementation usually takes place at the physical level or "layer" of the network.
